The architectural element that marks Lampedusa's environment is the Dammuso: an ancient peasant house built with lava stone and with a cupola roof. The type of structure has a defensive character, it was invented in the 10th century when the island was subjected to frequent pirate attacks from the sea. Today the Dammuso have been transformed into comfortable holiday houses.
