The Sea

The sea is one of the basic aspects of the holiday in Lampedusa. Following smooth descents the seaside is easily reached and in a short time you may find yourself in a wonderful spot by the sea with no crowd to trample on your towel also if it is the middle of august.

Because of its volcanic origin there are no sand beaches on the island. But this will certainly not avoid you from enjoying the beauties of the sea. A sea with wonderful seabeds, transparent water and smooth rocks on which you may comfortably sunbathe. We expecially recommend Martingana, Balata dei Turchi, Faraglione and Arco dell'Elefante.

To be sure to have really seen Lampedusa's sea remember the tour around the island on a specifically rented boat or dinghy. There are unmissable natural landings - beautiful pebble and fine gravel beaches - hidden amongst the rugged coast and that may only be reached from the water.

Lampedusa hosts many diving centers where scuba diving lovers have the opportunity of discovering a rich with posidonias and rare corals (black coral too) seabed. There are some impressive spots to plunge in and snorkel, where big fish, lobsters, moray eels, red and white sea fans and sponges are spotted. And those who love undersea archaeology may keep an eye open for amphora fragments and anchors scattered amongst the yellow sponges.
